Traditional Dutch giant butter cookie/cake

Hi!

Ready for something special and utterly delicious!? This recipe is one of my favorite bakes when I was a child, but damn it is still very tasty. My boyfriend absolutely loves it and wanted me to bake one. However, there is another story behind it. We are students and were in need for more motivation in order to study. So we made some kind of bet, if one of us receives a grade of a 9.5 or higher the other one needs to bake something the one with the (approximately) 10  desires. Jordy recently got THREE tens and wanted a boterkoek (translates to butter cookie), a  traditional Dutch cookie/cake and I thought I would share the recipe with you!

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams butter (I know that is a lot, hence the name)
  • 100 grams granulated sugar
  • 100 grams caster sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 300 grams of flour
  • 1 egg, beaten

You also need a traditional “boterkoek” pan or another type of baking pan that is round pan of 24 cm, but it should contain out of one piece! Otherwise when the butter melts it leaves an oily mess.. I learned that the hard way…

Picture

Traditional boterkoek pan
Method:

  1. Mix the butter with the two types of sugar and salt
  2. Kneed the flour with the butter mixture into a ball of dough
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic foil and let it rest for at least an hour
  4. Flatten the dough into the baking pan and even it out with a spoon
  5. Coat the top of the dough with the beaten egg
  6. Let it rest for another half hour and pre-heat the oven on 200 degrees celsius
  7. Coat the top of the dough again and then use a vork to make little diamond shapes into the dough
  8. Bake the dough for 20 minutes or until golden brown
  9. Let it cool so that the cookie/cake hardens
  10. Enjoy!!!

I hope you love this as much as my boyfriend! Let me know if you recreate it and what you would like to see next on my blog!

September Favs

Hi!

I can’t believe how fast September went… It was a bit of a crazy month one moment it felt like summer and the next it was full on autumn! (Not that I mind) The best thing about September is probably that I could wrap myself into a blanket without sweating after five minutes. Read further for my beauty and non beauty related favs!

Beauty favs

I don’t have a lot of beauty favs this month, but lets just get  into it! Three products is better than nothing. First I would like to talk about the Emité Laquer in the colour Hone that I got in the last StyleTone box I received. It is such a pretty colour and the formula is amazing! It dries quickly and you only need one coat.

Since the weather of September went through a transition phase my skin got a bit dry and I fell in love with the Candied Ginger Body Butter of The Body Shop. The scent is sweet, but not too sweet with a hind of ginger and a bit of spices. Its lovely and very moisturizing.

This is probs my fav beauty product this month, the Sweet Tea Luminous Bronzer by Too Faced. I love that it has two shades, sometimes i mix the two or use the lightest shades on its own. However, when I had a tan during summer I could use the dark on its own. The bronzer is very blendable and the shine that it has makes the product look natural and very beautiful!  I wish Too Faced had a shop in the Netherlands…

Other favs

Fav food: peanut butter jelly sandwich ❤
Fav drink: Green Chai Tea by Clippper Tea
Fav tv-series: I watched Marco Polo and Narcos this month and sorry I can’t choose. Both are amazing and I highly recommend them!
Fav movie: Pretty Woman, because Julia Roberts is awesome
Fav clothing item: High Waisted Jeans from H&M that only cost €9,99!
Fav person on social media: Lilly Singh a.k.a. iiSuperwomanii, she is hilarious and her Girl Love promotion campaign is amazing. Check her out on youtube!!
Fav song: Perfect Strangers by Jonas Blue

What did you love this month? Let me know!

Lets talk about being different

Hi!

Today I am going to talk about that being different and liking stuff that others don’t like is okay. Its more than okay actually, it is great. Imagine a world where we would all be the same, that would be so boring and grey the only upside is that maybe there could be peace…

Do not see this as a rant I just want to share my opinion and if you want we can have a little chat. You are probably wondering why I want to talk about this, well keep reading.

Yesterday I went to a concert to see a band perform for the third time. When I was 13 I got obsessed with them and honestly I still like to listen to their music six years later. They are hated on, but also loved by many people. And sadly I often run into people that do not like them or aren’t fan of bands for that matter, because of that I got a shamed for my taste in music. However, I do like almost any type of music but I always return to rock. So you probably want to know which band… it is Nickelback(!) And it was amazing (see pictures below).

Back to the story and little motivational speech. I started to call Nickelback my “guilty pleasure”, which is stupid. Why would you need to  feel guilty for liking music, clothes, food etc. that is not mainstream. Don’t let others keep you down, do what you want to do and do not care about what the rest of society does. Everyone is different and therefore there shouldn’t be a reason to feel ashamed of being yourself or the stuff you are interested in. The concert made me realise multiple things: 1. Nickelback is still amazing 2.  I shouldn’t be ashamed about enjoying music or anything else that others do not enjoy 3. there are always people who do enjoy the same things as you  and 4. F everyone that makes fun of you.

You are unique and should be proud about the little quirks that make you special. Want to have a little chat about how awesome differences are? Comment below, I would love to talk to you! And remember, you are amazing and have the right to like things that aren’t regularly a trending topic. #beingdifferentisnormal

We also made some selfies, but the lighting was horrible so I won’t scare the crap out of you. Honestly, my mom and little sis do look good on the picture and I didn’t… so yeah you just need to believe that I was there. xxx

Figs & Rouge Detox Mask: Review

Hi!

Today I am going to tell you my thoughts on the Figs & Rouge pore clarifying mineral detox mask that I received in my September StyleTone box. I have used it a few times now and I thought it would be helpful to tell you about my experience since it has a price tag of €31,50. Okay, that isn’t that shocking for a facemask, but is it really worth it? Keep reading and find out!

On the packaging it promises to eliminate impurities, drawing out excess oils, de-clogs pores, minimises pores, targets inflammation & breakouts, normalises skin tone and promotes a clearer and healthier complexion.  When I first started to breakout I thought it would be over when I turned 18. I’m 19 now…. Breaking out and having blackheads isn’t bad, it’s natural, but damn it can be annoying. I will stop nagging now and just tell you my review!

Picture

So here is a little before (left side) and after (right side) picture, zoom in if you want haha. As you can see my nose suffers from blackheads and I feel like the mask has really cleared it up a bit! I didn’t really notice until I had put the pictures next to each other. This is so awesome! In the after picture my skin looks healthier and clearer. On top of that it felt really nice afterwards and didn’t dry out my skin!

I also wanted to show you my cheeks, since I have the feeling that the pores are a bit too visible sometimes. Again, the left picture is a before and the right picture was taken after I had the facemask on for 10-15 minutes. So, I don’t really know what happened but as you can see my pores are more visible in the after picture…  MAJOR BUMMER

Overall I think the facemask is okay, it worked really well for my nose but sadly not so much for my cheeks. It smelled nice (soft sweet smell) and made my skin feel cleaner.  I’ll keep using it, however I don’t think that I’m going to repurchase this product. There are so many facemasks out there and I would love to try out more.

I hope you found my review helpful! Let me know what you think of this facemask and/or if you have any recommendations for another facemask.

Maxime

Study Tips!

Hi!

School has started again and I am not going to lie, it is pretty hard to get back on track. With that I mean to hustle as hard as I did last year, but I think I’m slowly getting there. At least I hope so…
Not to brag, but for the Dutch college/school system I am kind of a straight A student. Often I am asked for help or why I always get high grades, so I thought maybe I can help you guys! (Again, I am not bragging.) I hope my tips will help!

  1. Start early! That is the most difficult thing for me at the moment since I got obsessed with Netflix during the summer break.  However, this tip is very important! Start early with learning and with writing essays, this way its easier to keep up with life and  reduce the risk of crying in a fetal position because of stress.
  2. Make a to-do list! I find to-do lists very helpful , because you keep track of your tasks. College is super busy, with this type of lists it becomes easier to handle and crossing stuff off the lists feels so damn good!
  3. Make summaries! I cannot stress this enough. Making summaries helps me a lot when I am studying. I always try to make a summary as soon as possible for every subject, so after we talked about a chapter during class I will make a summary of that chapter the same week. The theory becomes easier to remember and again 0 stress when the exams are coming closer. I like to write my summaries with pen and paper, however typing it out is also fine. I have the feeling that writing it down helps me with remembering things better, but use what works for you! A few weeks before the test I like to start reading the summary and highlight the most important things. Again it becomes easier to remember (and it looks nice).

4.        Flash cards! I like to make flash cards when there are a lot of years or concepts that I need to                     remember. Making it can be quite a tasks, so maybe you can make them with classmates and                       share the cards with them.
5.       Test your knowledge! Of course you can do this with flash cards, but other ways are letting your               parents, classmates or any other person that wants to help, test you by asking questions.
6.       Practise! You can do this by making exercises or even better, get your hands on a mock exam.                     Then you know how the test will look like, practise, test your knowledge and learn from the                          mistakes that you made.

I think that was it. i hope that these tips helped you out and/or gave you a bit more motivation to starts studying. Leave a comment down below or contact me on social media and let me know what you would like to read next on my blog.

StyleTone Unboxing: September 2016

 Hi!

Before I start with being overly excited the unboxing I wanted to let you know that I am very sorry for not uploading last week. As you might know, college has started again and last week my schedule was super busy 😦 Hopefully that was the first and last time I’m going miss a week of blogging. But now let’s get to the fun part! I received a new StyleTone box and wow, what a box it was.

The box contained:

  • Milky Lips by Ellis Faas, €27
  • Pore qualifying mineral detox mask by Figs & Rouge, €31, 50
  • Nail lacquer by Emité, €12
  • Mono eyeshadow by Notee, €9,90
  • Eyerule NO 4 volumizing extreme mascara by Ace of Face, €14,90

That is a total worth of €95,30 and I only payed €12,50

First thoughts on the products

I never heard about Ellis Faas, but apparently Vogue states that “she is one of the most influential makeup artist of her time.” However, more importantly this month I received one of her most popular products: the Milky Lips in the colour L201 also known as the Ellis Red.  I love red lips and this dark red colour is so beautiful! I am  going to wear this so much. The formula is a bit glossy, highly pigmented and it felt really nice on my skin. Even though the packaging looks very sleek, I don’t really like the fact that is has a small brush as applicator and that you need to twist the bottom in order to get product on the brush. Maybe I just need to get used to it, but I don’t think it will beat a classical lipstick for me.
I love pampering myself with face mask, so I am very excited about getting to try the Pore qualifying mineral detox mask (what a long name) by Figs & Rouge! However, I wore a face mask while opening this box and I am afraid that using face masks too often will make my skin break out. The product promises to eliminate impurities, such as blackheads, and draw out excess oils for a better looking skin. If you would like to read a review on this mask, please let me know!
The Nail lacquer caught my eye straight away, so I had to apply it as fast as I could. I don’t think I ever liked a nail polish as much and as fast as I did now. Is there a difference between a nail polish and lacquer? (I’m sorry if there is)
The colour is amazing and also very  on trend at the moment. It is a nude/rosy colour and I think you can wear this every season. Moreover the application is wonderful, you only need one layer and it dries super fast!! I need to have more Emité nail polishes, because I have never had such good thoughts on other brands.
I am also a very big fan of eyeshadows, if i do not wear eyeshadow my eyelids feel naked. However, normally I use warm toned eyeshadows in order to make my eyes look extra blue. The colour I received from the brand Note is called Number 4 and is a slightly shimmery  grey that will be perfect for a classic smokey eye. The product feels buttery, so I have the feeling that it will be very easy to blend. I don’t think that I would have bought this colour myself, but now I am kind of excited about it!? Even though, I don’t really know why. I guess I need to get into dark smokey eyes.
The last product in the box was a mascara by the brand Ace of Face (I love that name). Trying out new mascaras is not my favorite thing in the world, because the first time always looks horrible, at least when I do it. For some kind of reason I need to get used to the wand and find a way to make my lashes look amazing.   So, yes I had to apply this mascara multiple times before I liked the result but then I also fell in love. It made my lashes look so long and volumised! The trick this time was to make a zig-zag movement when applying the mascara.

Sadly, that was it for this month’s unboxing. I loved this box so much, there weren’t any products that I disliked and I can’t wait to try them out more. StyleTone slayed it and I am already excited about the next box.

Healthified Chocolate Chip Iced Coffee: Homemade

Summer is still going strong in the Netherlands! And one of my favorite drinks in such beautiful/ very warm weather is iced coffee. However, when you get an iced coffee from Starbucks, supermarket or almost any other place it is loaded with sugar and calories. Unnecessary if you ask me… therefore I often make it myself and today I want to share one of my recipes with you!

Ingredients for 1 big Iced Coffee (500 ml):

  •  1 cup of cold, strong coffee
  • 1/2 cup of milk of choice,  I like to use oat or almond milk
  • 2 small blocks of (extra) dark chocolate
  • approx. 1 teaspoon of agave syrup, or less/more depending on how sweet you like to have your ice coffee
  • 1 cup of ice cubes

Method:
Put the blocks of dark chocolate in the blender and let it spin for until it turns into small chunks of chocolate. Then add the rest of the ingredients and turn the blender on for a minute or two, or until you are satisfied with the size of the ice cubes. And that is it actually! When transferring the drink into a glass the pieces of chocolate may sink to the bottom of the blender, but you can carefully scoop them out with a spoon. It is very easy to make, but just as delicious and way more healthier and natural than the average Iced Coffee.

Let me know what kind of recipes you would like to see next on my blog. If you recreate this recipe, please send a picture of your Iced Coffee via twitter!Love Life,

August Favorites

Hi!
A new month has started and soon we will roll into a new season. Even though, I will miss the summer warmth I am very excited about Autumn! The time of pumpkins, falling leaves, sweater weather, where drinking hot chocolate isn’t that crazy, Halloween, cozy stay-inns and I could go on and on about it. I believe that most of the people have a favorite season, but honestly I love every single one of them! They all have their own beauty. Before I give myself more time to ramble on about Autumn I’d like to take a look back at my favorite (summery) products, things, person etc. of August, I divided my favs in the categories “beauty” and “other”. In the beauty category I will give you some in depth info about the product and of course why I love it. But in the other category there will be a list from favorite food to favorite exercise (it can very per month) with sometimes a small explanation. Enjoy!

Beauty

I already raved about this product in my StyleTone August unboxing blogpost and I have been using it almost every day since I received this. You probably guessed the product already, but for those who didn’t I am talking about the Brow Setter by Pease. I use it for filling in my eyebrows, but you can also easily shape your eyebrows with it. The product looks beautiful, doesn’t smudge or fade and yeah I just really like it!
Another thing I have been loving this month is the Hangover Replenishing Face Primer  by Too Faced. Not only because of the name but also for the delicious coconut/pina colada scent, cute packaging, how it hydrates my skin and mostly because it makes my makeup look amazingly good! The primer contains coconut water, probiotic-based ingredients and skin revivers which makes it very nourishing. I get dry skin pretty quickly and this primer made a big difference for me. Definitely try it out when you also have dry skin!

I have had the Shaaanxo eyeshadow and lipstick palette in one since it came out and it was love at first sight. However, if I’m honest I like the shadows more than the lipsticks since they really need a lipliner (in my opinion).  Nevertheless, Shaaanxo has done an amazing job on the colour range of both sides of the palette and I have used it a lot in August. That’s because I got into natural and soft pink smokey eyes and the top six colours are just perfect for that so I kept grabbing this palette.
The perfume that I have been wearing (do you wear a perfume? or do you use it?) is Quatre by Boucheron. It has been very hot in the Netherlands and with that kind of weather I like to use a perfume with a fresh scent and Quatre is one of them! The notes of Quatre include: lime, grapefruit, peach, strawberry, cedar and white musk. The scent is a tad sweet, but not sickly sweet, I can almost describe it as sophisticated. It kind of makes  feel like a Parisian woman?! Is that weird?

Other

Moving on, I have been loving way more things besides beauty products this month! Here is a small list.

Fav food: the fries from Friethoes, read my blogpost about Mysteryland to read more about them!
Fav person on social media: that’s definitely Zoella, I have been loving her main channel vids, but her vlogs are even more amazing!
Fav drink: ice cold water
Fav clothing item: simple white t-shirt
Fav exercise: squats!
Fav tv-series: “Don’t trust the bitch in apartment 23” it’s kind of like 2 broke girls, but the jokes are way better. A friend recommended it to me and now I’m recommending it to you!
And lastly:

Picture

Fav quote! Idk if you can actually see this as a quote, but I came across it a few times in August and I just love the positivity it brings, but also the type of sassy that it has.

I hope you enjoyed my first monthly favorites. Let me know what you loved in the month of August or things that I should try out!

Mysteryland

Last weekend I visited Mysteryland, for the second year in a row with my boyfriend and some friends. Mysteryland is known as the festival of music and arts, it is very open minded and attracts a lot of different kind of people every year. If you want to get to know more about the festival, click here. Even though, the festival was officially held on Saturday and Sunday  we were able to get camping tickets and stayed there from Friday afternoon until Monday morning. The weekend was filled with dance/techno music, weird dance moves and most importantly delicious food!
On Friday night we danced to DJ’s I had never heard of, but the music was great and it felt like everyone was having the time of their lives. Just like last year their was a food truck on the campsite that sold organic fries that still had the potato skin on it. Raving about fries feels a bit weird, but these are the best fries I ever had. So, we had to eat them again. If you ever have the opportunity to get fries from Friethoes (friet is Dutch for fries) than go get them!

Saturday

On the first day of Mysteryland we mostly looked around to see the different types of stages and the artworks that were displayed at the festival, since there weren’t a lot of artist that we wanted to see. We did saw some artist perform but my favourites of that day where KSHMR, Kriss Kross Amsterdam and FeestdjRuud. After FeestdjRuud at the stage Crazy Town we went to Q-Dance for the end show of that day hosted by The Viper. I don’t really enjoy the type of music at this stage, but it was okayish and the lasers and fireworks were amazing!

Sunday

On  the last day of the actual festival I partied to Da Tweekaz, Robin Schulz (!!!), FeestdjRuud again and Diplo/Major Lazer. I wish we stayed longer at the mainstage for Robin Schulz, but most of the boys wanted to go to the Q-Dance stage for Frontliner. We also saw him last year and I enjoyed that performance way more compared to this year. Probs, because I was very cold. So after grabbing my boyfriend’s jacket at the campsite I met the boys at Crazy Town where we got some food and partied during the last performance of FeestdjRuud ever at Mysteryland.  Then it was sadly time for the last end show hosted by Diplo/Major Lazer.
I also ate a Turkish pizza, a Dutch croquette and some more fries, but I forgot to take a picture of it 😦
When we woke up on Monday, it was time for breakfast (uhm duh) and to pack our stuff. All in all, Mysteryland was again an amazing experience and I would recommend this festival to everybody. I hope we can visit Mysteryland again, next year! I am going to miss the fries… But I will definitely (try to) recreate the pickled cucumbers that were on the burger and the triple bread grilled cheese!

Hopefully you enjoyed this blogpost, below you can find more pictures that I took during the weekend 🙂

StyleTone unboxing: August 2016

Hi!

I received my first StyleTone box and I am super excited to tell you about the products I received this month! You are probably wondering: what the heck is Styletone? Well, StyleTone is a Dutch company who gathers new or on trend beauty products (mostly make-up) that are 100% cruelty free. Every month you will receive 5 full size products and a pamphlet with some tips and tricks for the products for only €12,50 or less per month, since the prices vary per subscription.
Ever since I discovered the youtuber Kathleenlights and her monthly unboxing videos on the companies Boxycharm and Ipsy who have the same kind of concept, I also wanted to receive a beauty box. Sadly, those companies do not ship to the Netherlands, but that doesn’t matter because I found Styletone!

So, the August box consisted of:

  1.  Cosmetic Glove by Ecoco, €7,95
  2.  Brow Setter by Paese, €11, 95
  3.  Rosy Cheeks by Seraphine, €20
  4. Tinted Lip Butter by Ellovi, €5
  5. Bronzer and Highlighter duo by Manna Kadar, €18,95

My thoughts on the products

Picture

The Cosmetic Glove is supposed to get rid of your make-up, all that it takes is the glove and some water. The glove can be cleaned by putting it in the washing machine, seems pretty ideal to me. I am really excited about this product, because I often forget to remove my make-up or I am too lazy to do it. However, I do want to make removing my make-up a daily chore in order to get a better skin. So hopefully this product will help me do that!

The Brow Setter by Pease is my new baby. I have been getting into doing my brows since I had let a specialist do my brows the “Anastasia way” a month ago. I used to be scared to do my brows, because I was afraid that they would end up looking fake however that day changed me.
I received this product in the color Dark Brown, which suits my hair color (yes! yes! yes!). I do have to get used to the waxy texture that the product has, but it looks very natural and beautiful!

The next product, the Rosy Cheeks, kind of scares me. It is a lip and cheek gel, but Styletone recommends to use it as a lipstain.  So, after I opened the tube I noticed that the color of the product was a very bright purple/pink. I decided to swatch a little bit on my hand, the gel applied patchy and it didn’t want to form an even layer. When I tried to remove it, I get why they say you should use it as a stain… Cause wow it stained and it still looked very bright, sadly the photo doesn’t do the color justice. I don’t think that I will ever use this on my cheeks, but I am actually very curious about how it will look on my lips  when wearing a winged eyeliner!

Another lip product that I received was the Tinted Lip Butter by Ellovi, very useful since I often have dry lips. However, the tint doesn’t show and it has a strange scent and taste. It does feel very moisturizing, but I can’t get over the smell and taste just yet. I hope I do, because my lips are much healthier compared to a few days ago. The balm is not a miss or a hit for me at the moment…

And last, but certainly not least (I know, very original line) the Bronzer and Highlighter Duo! This is one of my favourite products in the box. The colors are both paler when swatched, which is a relief since I am a bit pale.  This highlighter is giving me life, it is that beautiful.  But I have the feeling that the bronzer will be too dark for my skintone. However, I can always use it as an eyeshadow. The only downside of this product is that the pan is very small. I wish there was more!

I hope you liked this unboxing blogpost with mini reviews. Please, let me know if you are interested in seeing the September StyleTone box!

Love Life,

Maxime
